Meet Tom
Tom, a confident 42-year-old with Down syndrome has taken significant strides toward independence- with his STAR NDIS Support Coordination team by his side. For years Tom’s parents took on the responsibility of managing his supports. When Tom began working with STAR’s NDIS Support Coordination services, Tom and his family embarked on a transformative journey.
With the guidance of a dedicated Support Coordinator, they can now make the most of Tom’s NDIS plan, enabling him to set and achieve personal goals. Tom’s newfound independence is truly inspiring. He now lives in a two-bedroom unit rented from Queensland Housing. He has brought on support workers who truly understand his unique needs. For instance, knowing Tom is nota morning person, his schedule was adjusted so he could attend activities in afternoon.
As Tom’s parents are ageing, his support coordinator has taken proactive steps in involving his extended family to manage his NDIS plan. He has gained the skills to navigate public transport and enjoys regular visits to the local shopping centre and park, where he loves shooting hoops. He is often seen on his bicycle near his home, going about his daily life with confidence.
